Apple and Shadow - drawing light and shade

Here, We have an object which has different values in its actual surface colours and patterns, as well as the various values of light and shade that describe its 3D form and shadows etc.

1. I have cropped the image below to create a more interesting composition (i.e.cropped to be not the same distance on both sides of the apple and so the 2 main spaces differ more behind the apple ie. asymmetrical negative spaces). I am not going to include the background detail for this study.

2. Next I observed a basic heart shape with the bottom trimmed off. Try seeing basic geometric or random shapes first and then refining each part, one at a time. This makes it easier to draw the shape accurately and in proportion.

3. DRAW UP 2 RECTANGLEs OF 20 X 16cm AND DIVIDE them ONCE vertically and horizontally TO MAKE A SIMPLE cross-hairs GRID - use an h pencil and sketch this in very lightly.

4. Using the intersecting points to guide you with proportions, draw in the shape of the apple and the horizontal edge of the table behind.

5. Lightly draw in the shadow's edge also, measuring the white shape behind it.

How many values on this   0-8 scale can you find in this image? Shade these two drawings of the same subject, using hatching and also using shading/ blending (so DRAW TWO RECTANGLES and repeat the apple drawing twice.)

Go through these sections one by one, using the image links in this Value, Light and Shade Master Index
