ROSE DRAWING PROJECT

Here is a photo of a simple white rose for a drawing project. There seems to be a value from every area of the scale.

1. Draw a reasonably big square (eg. 15x15cm or >)

2. Concentrate on visualising a big oval and a smaller inner oval, as shown below, and draw them into a square of any size but not too small. Notice also the axis of the ovals is different. Observe the negative space that the larger oval makes with the frame of reference and also the negative shapes between the smaller oval and the outside petals.

- now add the other lines that outline the petals outside the inner oval, then the bud petal lines inside.

- use your charcoal to shade in the black last.   …not now or it will smear everywhere!!!

- before that,  estimate the darkest values on the rose itself with your 6B, blend with your paper stump,

* you could then smudge all over and erase highlights, assess values again and add in any mid-tones you can see.

- use your blending tool and eraser to constantly (all the time) remove hard lines and get nice smooth gradients from one value to the next.

As mentioned before, use your black charcoal to fill in the black background last.(or black ink if your paper is a good quality)
